Djim Berger

Born in the Netherlands in 1980 and a 2009 graduate of the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven, Djim Berger is a true porcelain alchemist. “The goal of my work is to open up the spectrum of porcelain. I experiment with it, make it take risks, and combine it in order to find new forms, colors, and techniques.”

The ‘Lightweight Porcelain’ collection highlights the artist’s desire to test porcelain and take it into new, uncharted territories, in search of a material that is visually and sensually renewed. Comparable to a beehive or an intriguing mineral such as pumice stone, 'Lightweight Porcelain’ is available in three models and 35 colors, each in a limited edition. Work by the artist is included in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

Stools, benches, children’s stools—all of which can also be used as side tables: Djim Berger literally reinvents the material, offering a version that is both lighter and extremely resistant. This technical performance is achieved by mixing one-third porcelain with two-thirds polystyrene beads, a feat that professionals considered impossible due to the high proportion of added polystyrene. Once the piece is fired, the polystyrene burns away, revealing a new form of porcelain.

In his series of bas-reliefs entitled ‘Porcelain Dust’, porcelain is activated as a pictorial material: sprayed in fine particles, it forms a halo of colored sfumato. Chromatic expanses with blurred contours compose these landscapes: horizons, vanishing lines, and subtle shifts of color. The powdery surface absorbs light as much as it reveals it, creating a dimension that is both mineral and immersive. Here, porcelain is no longer volume, but a sensitive, almost atmospheric presence. Each work is unique and can be presented in four different orientations, offering a renewed reading each time.
