Galerie BSL: Collectible Design in Its Organic Register
Béatrice Saint-Laurent opened her gallery in 2010 with a stance that was far from obvious at the time: to erase the line between art, sculpture and design. Fifteen years on, collectible design is a market, and her line — organic, biomorphic, tactile — is recognisable at a glance.
Unique pieces or very small series, made with workshops, where the material matters as much as the form: textures, deep colours, volumes that seem to have grown rather than been drawn. These are not objects you find in a showroom, nor are they decorative art: they are a third territory, one to be studied up close.
Faced with a unique gallery piece, our tool can do nothing but tell the truth: this one exists only once. That is useful information, and it is also the limit that defines everything else. Part of what plays out in galleries today will end up, in ten years’ time, in production — this is the only place where you see furniture before it exists.
